Mark Begich (AK)
Mark Begich is a lifelong Alaskan who gives voters in November something to vote for. Under Mark's leadership, Anchorage has seen real results. Anchorage's bond ratings have improved to among the best in the country, over 9,000 new jobs have been created, the city enjoyed the second highest construction value in city history and between 2003-2007, property taxes dropped for the majority of Anchorage property owners. Also thanks to his leadership, Anchorage was named one of America's "100 Best Communities for Young People!"
Mark's distinguished career began when he was just 26 when he was first elected to the Anchorage Assembly where he served for 10 years. He was elected chairman three times by his colleagues, the city's second highest office. In 2003, he was elected Mayor, beating out the incumbent and was reelected in 2006 with one of the largest margins in city history. In 2004, Alaska's municipal officials named Mark the top statewide official.
Mark lives in East Anchorage with his wife of 17 years, Deborah Bonito and their son, Jacob.
Mark handily won the Democratic primary in August and is now running against longtime incumbent Republican Senator Ted Stevens. Earlier this summer Senator Stevens was indicted on seven counts of filing false financial disclosures and is currently on trail. Recently CQ Politics changed the rating of this race from "Leans Republican" to "Leans Democrat" but he still faces a fundraising disadvantage.
Mark is on track to be Alaska's first Democratic senator for 28 years but he needs your help today.
It is Democrats like Mark, from traditionally Republican states, that will help change Washington and build the majority in Congress that President Obama will need.
We must do everything we can to help elect Mark Begich. You can help his campaign by contributing now. If you live near Mark and would like to help you can also sign up to volunteer and we will help connect with his campaign. The stakes are too high, the time is short – get involved today.
