Paul Kanjorski (PA-11)
In Pennsylvania's 11th Congressional District, Congressman Kanjorski is best known for his efforts to harness federal resources to stimulate economic development and support job creation.
As Chairman of the Capital Markets Subcommittee, Congressman Kanjorski has taken many steps to respond to the slowing of the American economy as a result of the turmoil in the subprime mortgage marketplace. Keeping our financial markets globally competitive, improving the housing market, increasing borrower safety, enhancing investor protection, and creating an optional federal charter for insurance are some of his top priorities for the Subcommittee.
Congressman Kanjorski is also a member of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform where he earned a solid reputation for leading efforts to streamline operations of government. He has served his district well by advancing vital projects such as the $250 million Wyoming Valley Levee Raising Project to protect residents from flooding and the $48 million renovation of the VA Medical Center in Wilkes-Barre.
Congressman Kanjorski served in the United States Army in the 1960’s. He graduated from Temple University and Dickinson School of Law. He resides in Nanticoke, Pennsylvania, with his wife Nancy and they have one daughter.
Congressman Kanjorski, a 12 term incumbent, faces a uniquely difficult challenge from Republican Lou Barletta. Barletta has cast himself as the “change” candidate and with a national landscape of Republicans struggling on defense; this race has been targeted as a chance for victory by the NRCC.
It is Democrats like Paul, with a proven record and reputation, who will help build the majority in Congress that President Obama will need.
