Meet Our Candidates

Mike McMahon (NY-13)

About Mike

mcmahon PhotoMichael McMahon is a longtime, trusted public servant. He currently serves on the New York City Council, where he has been making a difference since his election in 2001.

As an active member of the City Council, Michael has been fighting for the issues that matter most to Staten Island.  He is a leader in the fight against traffic congestion, fighting for expanded ferry service and mass transit. In an effort to protect and preserve local communities, Michael has fought to strengthen landmarks laws and to preserve open spaces. He helped spearhead the 2003 Staten Island down-zoning, which protects communities from over development by preserving their character and density.  Michael is also working to improve the local environment. As Chair of the New York City Council’s Committee on Solid Waste and Sanitation, Michael led the fight to keep the Fresh Kills Dump in Staten Island closed and to ensure that it will be transformed into a 2,200-acre public park.

Michael also shares an important priority with Hillary – quality, affordable health care for all Americans.   Thanks to his legislative and community organizing efforts, Michael McMahon’s School Nursing Bill was made law on June 7th, 2004 and today the City’s Department of Health is required to provide at least one full time, onsite nurse to any school, public or parochial, with over 200 students.  Michael has also expanded funding for mobile health services, such as mammography vans, and ensured that local community-based organizations receive their fair share of city funding.

Michael is a Staten Island native and a graduate of New York University and New York Law School.  He is married to Judith Novellino McMahon, judge of the Civil Court and acting Supreme Court Justice. They have two children, Joseph and Julia.

State of the Race

The New York 13th Congressional district seat is vacant due to early retirement of Republican, Vito Fossella.  Michael won the Democratic primary with a stunning 75% of the vote.  In the general election he faces Assemblyman Robert Straniere, who Republicans nominated after their earlier choice, Francis Powers, suddenly passed away.   The race was recently been added to the DCCC's Red to Blue program and is considered a major pick-up opportunity for Democrats in November.

Michael received key support in the primary and going into the general, including primary endorsements from the Staten Island Advance, New York Times, Brooklyn Paper and Courier Life, endorsements from elected leaders including Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, Senator Charles Schumer, Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, former Mayor Ed Koch, and members of the New York City Congressional Delegation, and critical labor support from the New York State AFL–CIO, the United Federation of Teachers, 1199 SEIU Healthcare East, UFCW, RWDSU, the UFA and UFOA. Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Republican Staten Island Borough President Jim Molinaro also recently endorsed Michael.
