Betty Sutton (OH-13)
Betty Sutton is a strong voice for working families in the United States Congress based on her lifetime commitment to public service.
Betty quickly made her mark in Congress after her election in 2006 and earned the "Fighting Freshman" award in 2007 from the United States Business and Industry Council (USBIC). The award, given infrequently to freshmen members of the U.S. House and Senate, recognizes Members for their work on trade and fighting for American manufacturing jobs. Sutton was also elected President of the Democratic Freshmen class because of her hard work and leadership in the House. Betty has been devoted to developing new trade, labor, and economic policies that benefit working families and businesses. In addition, she led the fight to pass the strongest ethics and lobbying reforms in Washington since Watergate. Additionally, she helped pass the largest increase in veterans' funding in the 77-year history of the Veterans Administration.
Like Senator Clinton, Betty is an advocate for education. She pushed for cutting college loan rates in half, and passing the America COMPETES Act - preparing our workforce for the jobs of tomorrow. Betty has also worked to protect our nation's environment, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and create new "green" jobs through the passage of landmark energy legislation.
Before running for Congress, Betty served eight years in the Ohio House of Representatives where she was recognized as Legislator of the Year by the Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers and received the Friend of Education Award from the Barberton Education Association. Betty graduated from Kent State University and the Law School at University of Akron. She won her first election for Barberton City Council while still a law student.
Betty lives with her husband Doug and their dog Cody in Copley Township.
Betty faces Republican challenger Dave Potter. The 13th Congressional District of OH has been in Democratic hands since 1977 and Betty Sutton won in 2006 with a 61% majority. Sutton recently received the endorsement of the Cleveland Plain Dealer. She also has the support of the American Nurses Association, American Medical Association, NEA, Ohio Federation of Teachers, and Planned Parenthood among many other organizations.
