Mark Udall (CO)
Mark's family has lived in the West for five generations, and the Udall name has become synonymous with quality public service for 150 years. His father, Mo, played for the Denver Nuggets, his uncle Stewart was a Congressman and Secretary of Interior for Presidents Kennedy and Johnson, and his cousin, Tom, is a Congressman running for US Senate in New Mexico. This year, their slogan is “Vote for the Udall nearest you.”
Mark has served in the US Congress since 1998, and has earned a reputation for taking leadership in difficult political environments. As a member of the Armed Services Committee, Mark co-authored legislation to strengthen our military and to develop new strategies for combating terrorism.
As co-chair of the House Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Caucus, Mark championed efforts to provide government support for the development of sustainable and renewable energy resources before energy resource diversity was widely recognized as an essential component to a sound energy policy. He also is responsible for sparking the clean-up of Rocky Flats—turning the closed nuclear trigger facility into a wildlife refuge.
Mark lives in Eldorado Springs with his wife Maggie Fox. They have two children, Jed and Tess.
Sitting Republican Senator Wayne Allard is not seeking re-election. Mark faces well-known former Republican Congressman Bob Schaffer in a close race for the open seat. Schaffer's candidacy has been tainted by revelations about his ties to now-jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff, his connections to a Congressional earmark scandal, and reports of his involvement in an oil deal in Kurdistan that violated U.S. State Department policy.
It is Democrats like Mark Udall, from red states turning blue, that will help change Washington and build the filibuster proof majority in the Senate that President Obama will need.
