About Tom

Udall PhotoAs a Member of Congress and Attorney General of New Mexico, Tom Udall has earned a reputation as a principled leader who has the integrity to make tough decisions.

Since his election to Congress in 1998, Tom has established himself as a leader on key issues. He currently serves as a member of the House Appropriations Committee, bringing back valuable funding to important projects all across the state. He has also worked to increase well-deserved benefits for veterans and supported small businesses owners while serving on previous committees.

In the House, Tom wrote and passed a bill to establish a national renewable energy standard to create good jobs, reinvigorate the economy, and reduce global warming. He has also been a champion of expanding preventive health care. He voted against the Iraq War and has called for the responsible redeployment of our troops out of Iraq. Tom has also consistently championed tougher ethics laws both as Attorney General and in Congress, where he voted to create an independent commission to investigate corruption among members of Congress.

Tom graduated from Prescott College and received law degrees from University of Cambridge and University of New Mexico Law School. Tom is married to Jill Cooper and they have one daughter, Amanda.

State of the Race

This race is quickly becoming one of the most closely watched of this election cycle. Tom Udall faces Congressman Steve Pearce for the open seat left by retiring longtime Republican Senator Pete Domenici. Republicans in New Mexico endured a divisive primary, with Pearce narrowly edging Albuquerque Representative Heather Wilson for the nomination. Pearce's special-interest ties and his position as one of CREW's 22 most-corrupt members of Congress make him a weak candidate heading into the general election. Udall has more than five times the cash on hand that Pearce has, and leads Pearce by double digits in polling.
